Maldini reveals Real offer
Saturday, 20 September 2003

PAOLO MALDINI has hinted that Real Madrid contacted him in the summer but that he decided he was too old to leave Milan, where he has spent his entire illustrious career.
Maldini admits that Real were the only club that could have ever lured him away from the Rossoneri, but that their only tentative approach came far too late.

"If I had started at an average team perhaps I would not have spent my whole career there," Maldini told L'Equipe.

"But at Milan I found a perfect atmosphere with the kind of ambition that suits me.

"I was born in Milan and all my family is here.

"I never wanted to play abroad. I would never leave this club after a failure, and every time I have won something here I wanted to stay and win more.

"I don't know if anywhere elsewhere could have handed me the perfect conditions.

"In England, for example, they play stress-free football. But who knows if that would have suited me?

"The only club in the world where I could have found the same tradition and ambition as Milan is Real Madrid, but they never contacted me.

"Perhaps last year they did, but I was already a 34-year-old.

"Now I will definitely finish my career at Milan.
I can't imagine him at another club, it's sacrilige even to try.

This occured during my year without Serie A.

MILAN captain Paolo Maldini has been banned for one match, after television footage showed him kicking out at Chievo's Oliver Bierhoff.
The Italian legend was hauled in front of the Italian football's video panel, headed by Maurizio Laudi.

Laudi ruled that Maldini had kicked out at Bierhoff, after the German had challenged him, and for that he has been handed a one-game suspension.

Because the referee at the time did not spot the incident, the Italian authorities could use video evidence.

And now I'm just in the zone
Maldini`s defensive partner Alessandro Nesta is clearly concerned about his team-mate.

He said: "It was a bad injury, but I don't feel I can blame Christian Vieri. He didn't want to hurt Paolo.

"I hope the captain will recover soon. We dedicate this victory to him."

Serginho went off later in the game, following a stiff challenge from Ivan Cordoba, but his knee injury is not thought to be too serious.

Nesta was not happy with the actions of Cordoba, saying: "It was really dangerous, Cordoba could have damaged Sergio more seriously."

Inter coach Hector Cuper felt Cordoba`s dismissal was correct, as he said: "I think it was right."
