Strong earthquake rattles Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rattled Trinidad and areas of Venezuela on Friday and was followed by a smaller aftershock, according to the   U.S. Geological Survey. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The earthquake struck at 9:08 a.m., swaying buildings in Trinidad's capital of Port-of-Spain and some schools and businesses were evacuated. A 5.5-magnitude aftershock followed at 2:23 p.m.

Both quakes were centered 25 miles northwest of Port-of-Spain and 40 miles northeast of Guiria, Venezuela, in the Caribbean Sea.

They did not disrupt operations at Trinidad's oil refinery or the country's major petroleum and chemical export complex at Point Lisas, officials said.

Flight arrivals and departures were delayed for two hours at Trinidad's international airport after the first quake.

Gustavo Malave, president of the Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Research, told state TV the quake was felt in eastern and southern Venezuela as well as the capital of Caracas.

It was also felt in Grenada, 100 miles north of Trinidad.

It's bizaare how unprepared we were at the office. I kept repeating, "is there a procedure, should we be doing something?" Everyone else was all "earthquake, omg!!" I just hope the excitement is all over for today.

I find them rather horrifyingly exciting but we don't get them very often. * crosses fingers for us both *

There's been some minor structural damage and some places are without electricity. Thankfully, there were no casualties.

Hope everyone's okay with you. 6.0 is pretty strong :/

We haven't had an earthquake here for a few years now. They're not common in the UK but there were two or three within about three years in the Midlands, it's pretty scary when it happens. 4.1, the last one, I think? Must be awful scary to have them often, especially if they're stronger -hugs-

It was scary but it was also curiously exciting. * huggles * It's an excitement I don't mind going without, though.

Ouch, earthquake sounds scary. I have never experienced one so I have no idea what it's like but it does sound scary.
6.0, isn't that pretty strong?
