Edited to include a disclaimer that this is not a blanket statement about all HP fanficcers.
The Harry Potter fandom has officially scared me. I think I'm a bit glutted on fanfic as a whole...and what a repugnant sentence that is. Apparently, the Potter fandom is a world unto itself with laws and politics. There are "large and important names in slash fandoms!" Pardon me while I say WTF! The only "large and important name" in the Potter fandom is JK Rowling. I'd naively assumed that fanfic and rpf writers were writing for their own enjoyment, to flex their writing muscles for bigger things later on and perhaps entertain a few people along the way. Never thought it was about world...er internet domination and inciting popularity contests and flame wars. God, the internet is just rife with research opportunities. If I were still in college I'd have enough stuff to carry me through to my PhD.

But enough about that. I'm considering going into one of my "news blackout" phases. The only problem is that I'm too old now to believe that bad news will go away if I ignore it. There was another kidnapping today, a fourteen year old kid. Yesterday another fourteen year old was killed by a gunshot to the head as he was standing outside a pub in the shadier part of St James, at two am. I'm not even going to ask what a minor child was doing out and about in the wee hours of the morning.

Some of the kidnappings are real but there are rumours to the effect that many of them have been staged. Usually by adult kids to extort money from their parents. One case was definitely proven. That is so unbelievably disgusting! What a horrible exploitation of parents' love and concern. I remember my parents' worry while we were waiting to find out if my cyst was benign or not. They were more afraid than I was! I can't imagine hurting them for the sake of money and I'm thoroughly selfish at times.

The marriage protection week (Bush has officially scared me too but he isn't as fun to watch as the Potter fandom fundamentalists) inspired me to rout out the homosexual legislation for Trinidad and Tobago. If ever I needed more proof that our nation's motto should be "We'll get around to it eventually" this was it. In a land where the odd gay bar exists (but only on Fridays) and there are a few prominent, openly gay citizens, the law states that not only is homosexuality illegal but no homosexuals can enter the country. All I can say is that we're lucky that as a nation we can laugh at ourselves.

I've been called "bitch," "elitist bitch" and "not nice" all in one day. The first two I managed without even leaving the house. I also had a theology lesson from a five year old.
I'd elaborate but "Law and Order" is on in a minute and I need caffeine.

Edited
Well, I can elaborate now. Here goes! )
