I had an interesting conversation today about the biological impetus of my football likes and dislikes. Now I've always said that watching football satisfies some basic, primal need within me. I don't really mean a sexual need though that's probably wrapped up in it somewhere. Organised sports are our modern answer to gladiators and tossing people to the lions for viewing pleasure.
In nature it's the males that display themselves and their strength. Females either pick the strongest male or get picked by the strongest male, depending on the species. So when women say that we like certain footballers such as Nesta, Maldini, Del Pierro or Totti are we responding instinctively, (yes, I know humans as a species have virtually no instincts left)attracted to those males with the best genes to pass on, the best hunters/providers and fathers for our young/cubs?
Sighs and misses Uni a great deal!
